Design Story

Knoll™ Generation® Chair

Generation by Knoll™ is a work chair that was destined for the informal, contemporary home office — it's the first task chair that allows you to sit and work the way you want! Generation is all about being able to express yourself and your individuality: with its dynamic elastomer surface, flex back and top and built-in ergonomics, the chair moves as you move, and it's designed to respond to the way you really sit, including seemingly unconventional postures.

The design innovations extend to the chair's sleek, slightly futuristic profile that strikes an uncommon balance between audacious and elegant. Although its head-on appearance is bold, its side view is so slight that the Generation almost seems to merge into its surroundings, which makes it an unobtrusive element in your home. Some of its advanced features include:

  • Built-in lumbar support
  • Tilt Preference selector
  • Adjustable seat height/depth
  • 4-star aluminum base

Generation is available in a range of signature colors, seat upholstery options and aluminum details that extend its versatility. Get yours right away with our in-Stock Quick Ship selection.

Knoll® Generation® Chair

Designed to intuitively respond to the way you really sit, including sitting sideways or backwards, the Generation chair by Knoll takes the idea of elastic design to a new level. The elastomer Flex Top, Flex Back and Flex Seat support the sitter through a wide range of movement, as well as contribute to the stylish, futuristic look of the chair's profile.

Features

Dynamic, flexible elastomer suspension
Evenly spaced plastic mesh material conforms to and supports your body while allowing air to pass through.

Flex Back, Seat and Top
The resilient Flex Back Net and distinctive figure 8 structure, along with a flexing seat, together support many different postures and allow for multidimensional movement.

Dynamic Suspension control
Synchronized recline counterbalances your body weight, resulting in a smooth and effortless ride.

Tilt Preference Selector
Allows the user to control the resistance felt when leaning back in the chair.

Continuous Lumbar
Ergonomic support is built in to the design of the chair back.

Lumbar attachment (Optional)
A height-adjustable lumbar attachment is available for those who need additional support.

Pneumatic Height adjustment
The seat height adjustment uses compressed air to raise or lower the seat height.

Seat Depth adjustment
The seat depth can be adjusted by 3 inches.

Adjustable Arms
Provide 4.5 in. of height adjustment. The free-floating arm pad naturally adjusts as you change from a task-oriented position to a side-seated posture.

Manufacturer's Warranty

The Generation chair comes with a 10-year manufacturer's warranty.

Environmental Benefits

The total recycled content for the chair with arms and aluminum base is 46% and for a plastic base is 40%. Generation by Knoll contains no polyvinyl chloride (PVCs). Generation is the first chair to earn a SMaRT© Sustainable Platinum rating. It is also GREENGUARD® Children & Schools certified and can contribute to achieving LEED® points.

Knoll History

Knoll Studio

The Knoll Company was founded in 1938 in New York by furniture craftsman Hans Knoll, who aspired to produce modern furniture that would be elegant, functional and affordable. In 1946, he married designer Florence Schust, who had been trained as an architect, and who would ultimately be recognized as one of the most influential women in 20th century design. She played a key role in the company's development, championing the Bauhaus approach and recruiting some of its most famous luminaries, such as Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Marcel Breur, resulting in Knoll becoming the only authorized seller of the some of the world’s most revered mid-century furniture designs.

Beginning in the 1940s, Knoll pioneered the concept of developing a working relationship with corporate clients and designing to meet their needs. In the ensuing decades, Knoll introduced tables to accommodate electronic technology, and office chairs with a fresh premise: rather than the sitter constantly adjusting the chair, the chair would adjust to the sitter! The result of this approach was a line of innovative office chairs combining ergonomic support with intuitive adaptability. Today, in addition to acclaim as a design leader, Knoll is also recognized for pioneering sustainable, “green” design policies designed to protect the biosphere.

In recognition of Knoll's contributions, the Louvre's Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris staged a 1972 exhibit devoted solely to the company's furniture. Knoll also currently has more than 40 pieces in the permanent Design Collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
