Design Story

Knoll® Wassily Chair

In 1925, inspired by the functional design of a bicycle's tube frame, Bauhaus designer and artist Marcel Breuer was inspired to create the first tubular steel chair, the Knoll® Wassily chair. The concept of a combining steel tubes and leather strips to create a chair was radical, yet so functionally and aesthetically sound that the Wassily chair has become an enduring symbol of modernism and a paradigm of 20th Century design. Made from a minimum of materials with a maximum of inspiration, the Wassily is the ideal wedding of succinctness and style, and will add a refined touch to any room in which you place it. Features include:

  • Frame is seamless tubular steel w. polished chrome finish
  • Thick cowhide leather upholstery in three colors
  • Skid-shaped frame with synthetic glides

This is the chair that forever changed traditional chair design and still makes a strong style statement today. Get yours right away with our In-Stock Quick Ship selection — ships free in 1–2 days. Customizable chairs ship within 4 to 6 weeks.

Knoll® Wassily™ Chair

The essence of austerity and “less is more,” The Knoll Wassily chair is constructed from a minimum of materials combined with maximum creativity. Inspired by the tubular steel frame of his bicycle, designer Marcel Breuer engineered a strong, spare, seamless polished chrome-plated steel chair frame from which leather strips were suspended. The resulting award-winning chair not only presents an innovative minimalist aesthetic with bold features like a slanting seat which forms an angle not perpendicular to the floor, but is also surprisingly comfortable.

A revolutionary creation that transformed traditional chair design, the still avant-garde Wassily chair was the first chair of its kind and remains today a symbol of modernism and functional design.

Knoll History

Knoll Studio

The Knoll Company was founded in 1938 in New York by furniture craftsman Hans Knoll, who aspired to produce modern furniture that would be elegant, functional and affordable. In 1946, he married designer Florence Schust, who had been trained as an architect, and who would ultimately be recognized as one of the most influential women in 20th century design. She played a key role in the company's development, championing the Bauhaus approach and recruiting some of its most famous luminaries, such as Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen and Marcel Breur, resulting in Knoll becoming the only authorized seller of the some of the world’s most revered mid-century furniture designs.

Beginning in the 1940s, Knoll pioneered the concept of developing a working relationship with corporate clients and designing to meet their needs. In the ensuing decades, Knoll introduced tables to accommodate electronic technology, and office chairs with a fresh premise: rather than the sitter constantly adjusting the chair, the chair would adjust to the sitter! The result of this approach was a line of innovative office chairs combining ergonomic support with intuitive adaptability. Today, in addition to acclaim as a design leader, Knoll is also recognized for pioneering sustainable, “green” design policies designed to protect the biosphere.

In recognition of Knoll's contributions, the Louvre's Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris staged a 1972 exhibit devoted solely to the company's furniture. Knoll also currently has more than 40 pieces in the permanent Design Collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
